The Steyning Bookshop opened in December 1984. The bookshop was once a crumbling 18th century High Street house in a picturesque downland town and then it got renovated into a family home and a bookshop.

At first glance it looks like a house, but when you explore further into the building you find that it’s packed with new books of all sorts, stationery and gifts and a big children’s section complete with a red wooden train which has served as shelving and seating for a generation of young children. It’s lovely to hear people coming into the shop with their toddlers and exclaiming with joy that the train is still there.
The Steyning Bookshop holds many author events and book groups on the premises which is very cosy and has a homely atmopshere, perfect for talking about books. For larger events, there are wonderful venues in the town including Springwells Hotel which has a great Breakfast Room and The Sussex Produce Company Café, a wonderful food store and restaurant, ideal for author suppers.

Steyning is a very beautiful location for the shop with South Downs just a few steps away and the coast nearby. Like many small towns that are village-like, there is a strong sense of community there and local people like to support their high street. There is never a dull moment in the town – a lively music society, a film society, a jazz club, choirs, a good library, book groups, a great museum and loads more.
